This is the time of year when angels get a little more press than usual, so I want to be a bit of an advocate for the holy ones at least. The fallen ones get too much press as it is, so they can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway...Just about every time an angel shows up in the Bible, the person to whom he is sent falls on his face in fear. In fact, 'do not fear' are usually the first words uttered by the angel. The shepherds in Bethlehem 'were greatly afraid' of just one angelic messenger. Think how they felt when 'a multitude of the heavenly host' showed up instantaneously!! (Luke 2:9-13) Would 'shaking in their sandals' fit the bill for a description?!!
What I want to know is howcome for CENTURIES artists have displayed angels as amorphous sissies who couldn't wing their way out of a wet paper bag, yet alone whup an army of 185,000 trained Assyrian warriors in one night single handedly?!! (Cf. 2 Kings 19:35)...Oh, and let's not forget the fate of the former first-born of Egypt the night before the Exodus at the hand of one destroyer angel!
If you want some encouragement as we approach the commemmoration of Heavenly Host choir practice in Bethlehem...an event of secondary importance in comparison to what they were sent to announce in the first place!!...remember that there are TWICE as many angels as there are demonic beings in the universe, since only a third fell with Lucifer in his personal Civil War...and on top of that, 'greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world,' if you know the Lord!! (I John 4:4)
I guess Angels With An Attitude would be the way to describe some of those described in Revelation...is it any wonder?!! Got wings?
